VERTICAL STUDIO ELECTIVE | Make Something Big

Project Submission Date: 6 July 2017

Duration of Project: 2 weeks

Weightage: 100% of VSE

Using the laser cutting facilities in school, we were tasked to devise a display case system that could be used to showcase pieces in an exhibition. The display cases had to be modular, customisable and transportation-friendly.

After going through four possible designs, we settled on the cube, because the clarity of the form would provide a minimalist aesthetic that complements the exhibition pieces, rather than draw attention from them.

The joint-system we devised is explained in a diagram in the board above.

The module concluded with a group presentation about our issue, design process and our final module.

Note from the group:

We took advantage of the rigid structure of the MDF boards to incorporate long beams into our design which allowed us to fully express the idea of a cube. This property of the MDF boards also ensured the stability of the structure when it was stacked with other modules.

The lightweight skeletal frame makes the module easily detachable for quick clean-up and convenient transportation as when it is dismantled, it does not take up a lot of space and is relatively light.

To minimise lateral shearing, we created three types of plates: profiled plates, tessellated plates and vertical fins which would hold the frames in place and prevent them from shifting.

The joints are unique because they allow each unit to be joined together without the need for additional connecting pieces, enhancing the overall cleanliness of the design.
