RESEARCH REVIEW | Jalan Besar
URBAN GRAIN ANALYSIS
ZONING BY USAGE
INFRASTRUCTURE
As our final project was an office building, we were tasked to gather data and analyse the site, Jalan Besar, on which our design would be built. By studying the history, culture, evolution, street patterns, traffic, pedestrian behaviour and other existing factors, we were able to get an idea of how our design should respond to the site and add to the richness and diversity of the Jalan Besar area. We also looked out for existing problems in the site and suggested ways in which we could combat these issues.
In addition, we needed to understand the relationship and significance of the site's history and its representation through Kevin Lynch's five elements of path, node, district, edge and landmark.
Finally, by taking into account climatic factors and contrasting the local weather data with that of Tokyo, we came out with a schematic massing that we felt would have a sensitivity for the site and its inhabitants.
