INDIVIDUAL DESIGN RESPONSE
This segment of the project involved identifying a public housing issue and coming up with solutions to tackle it while attempting to redefine what public housing is. The issue I had pinpointed was increasing loneliness and dementia in elderly Singaporeans, and I wanted to design a residence that would allow them to be active and engaged within the comfort of the building itself.
Being inspired by projects such as The Interlace by OMA Architects and Stacking Tower by Krause Architects, I wanted to design a structure that involved stacking individual blocks on top of each other to turn a traditional, static building into something dynamic. I explored 7 different models until I was satisfied with a design that would allow me to have expansive semi-private spaces and a well-lit interior.
We also had to plan the spaces of the units and ground floor and decide on the ratio of 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom units. We also did shadow studies to explore lighting throughout the building at different times of the day, at different times of the year.
