Project Submission Date: 13 May 2020

Duration of Project: 13 Weeks

Grade Received: High Distinction

Located in Newtown, Sydney, the project required the design of 3 dwellings, a cafe, and communal spaces for the residents, with the goal of developing an architectural proposal that would fully support the inhabitants in both social togetherness and separation.

The organization was conceived as a stacked array of volumes around a central promenade that functioned as a communal garden. In order to mitigate overshadowing from neighbouring lots, the volumes were arranged in a terraced formation from 3 stories at the south edge to 1 storey at the north edge of the site. On the ground floor, the café stretches along the eastern edge of the lot , providing a place for rest and relaxation with charming views of the adjacent Hollis park. An extensive green roof is incorporated to provide visual identity to the project, regulate ambient temperatures on the top floor and reduce the urban heat effect.

To facilitate privacy to the residents, each dwelling is entered at a different level and is designed according to its advantages and disadvantages per location on site.

Instead of dividing the different functions of the building –communal spaces and dwellings– into separate entities, the various functions have been conceived as a unified complex that facilitates the seamless movement between areas of different levels of social separation and interaction.
